Ruidoso

The Family spent a few days with Clovis and Mag Barker at their Ruidoso home.

We got to experience the cool days of NM and the Capitan Mountains (The only mountains that run from East to West in North America.) Cody and I got to spend some time at National Space Museum in Alamogordo, NM.

Anna and the girls (Christi, Kaitlin, and Mag) went SHOPPING on Main Street Ruidoso. (They really did some damage.) Mag says shopping is her favorite sport. Clovis spent some time showing me around the golf course. We watched the World Cup and a really depressing movie, “Cold Mountain.” Sorry, Clovis… but I enjoyed the company.

We also went to the Flying J Chuckwagon and Western Show. The food was good and the music was GREAT…they even had the National Female Yodeling Champion.

One of the funnest things that happened is that I got out done by a 70 year old grandma (Mag) on a three mile walk up and down hills. I was huffing and puffing while she was just talking away and hardly broke a sweat. Mag is a MACHINE!

Church in Ruidoso was special. We went to a church called, CHURCH OUT OF CHURCH on Sunday morning. I found myself REALLY moved by the worship. It was SO REFRESHING to get to worship! I am ashamed to say that I have often allowed myself to worry so much about the service in Medina, that I don’t really get to worship that much. I am going to really work hard to try to cultivate and maintain the proper attitude toward worship when I get back to Medina. In the meantime… I am really looking forward to WORSHIP. I never knew how dry I had become.

I think of Keith Green’s song in the 70’s, “My Eyes Are Dry.”

My eyes are dry
My faith is old
My heart is hard
My prayers are cold
And I know how I ought to be
Alive to You and dead to me

But what can be done
For an old heart like mine
Soften it up
With oil and wine
The oil is You, Your Spirit of love
Please wash me anew
With the wine of Your Blood

The message was also good at CHURCH OUT OF CHURCH. The pastor had gotten sick the night before so his 23 year old son took the pulpit. He simply shared a few Scriptures and shared from the heart… BUT IT WAS THE WORSHIP THAT GOT ME!

Right now were in ANGEL FIRE. More later…

Where did the TIME Go?

Lately I’ve been doing a lot of reflecting on how fast time goes by! The Bible says that our lives are like a vapor and BOY am I starting to believe it! The following video of Christi being baptized is almost 10 years old. Christi was seven years old at the time. Today, she has grown up to be quite a lady and me… I’m not nearly as buff as I was back then and most of my hair is gone. Oh well.

My prayer is the same prayer that David prayed in Psalm 90:12, “Teach us to number our days that we may present to You a heart of wisdom.”

Earn This

This weekend is Memorial Day Weekend. It’s a time that we celebrate and remember the incredible sacrifices made by so many people to make this country great. The last few years, I’ve made a point every Memorial Day to watch the clip from “Saving Private Ryan,” where Captain Miller says to Private Ryan, “Earn This,” as he gave up his life for Private Ryan during WWII. The closing scene shows Ryan as an old man before Miller’s grave years later and he says, “I’ve thought about your words at the bridge every day of my life… I hope I’ve earned it,” His wife then walks up and he asks, “Tell me I’ve had a good life… Tell me I’m a good person,” and she then comforts and affirms him.

I don’t know how many times I’ve seen that scene, but it AWAYS moves me to tears. My prayer is that it might also move us to ACTION. May we use this Memorial Day to take inventory of how BLESSED we are as a nation. May we also seek to be grateful for the sacrifice of Jesus and though there’s no way we can ever come close to earning it… may we live our lives as a grateful response.
